Alignment
How to align text, track titles etc.aligned left, right, centred or justified.
Justified affects spacing between letters
Centred, left and right aligned had rag. Can be distracting, need visual balance.
Paragraphs
Indented text or full line breaks.
Leading
The distance between lines.
Too close, ascenders and descender could touch, too big could lead to reading issues.
Tracking
The space between the words and letters.
0 = how it's originally set
+ = closer together
- = further apart
Line length
Efficient reading depends on comfortable line length. 40-75 characters or 7-12 words.
Short length = ugly rag
Long length = difficult to read, lose place alongt he line.
Widows and Orphans
lines or words left hanging or separated from complete block of text - look messy and inconsidered, need to manipulate rest of text to avoid these.
Rivers
white lines formed between letters, can be seen in overall body of text.
How to start:
Find a grid - use for layout/type organisation
Find a number linked to genre (rhythm, bpm from song, number of members etc.) - use it
Find a ratio/size - use to quickly modify type
Find words which transfer to a visual - use to manipulate type
Techniques:
Snake text - make it move around, change direction.
- what could the pattern be based on?
-follow a path?
-be a map?
Repetition
- create a image
-play with letterform
-make a pattern
Split 50/50
Play with tracking and leading
Grid
-where has it come from?
-plan of building?
-map of place?
Look at it might not see the genre, but when writing have justifications for each design element, informed by research.
