I began the session off by looking into the layout of the sleeve a bit more, I wanted to use text is a more simplistic way as some feedback from my crit suggested the sleeve was beginning to look cramped and chaotic. I started by looking at the effect of size on the type.

Small Text |

Medium Text |

Large Text |
- I found the large text to be too distracting, I want the image to be the most eye catching thing on the outer sleeve.
- Small text worked best, would need to think about the placement when with image so the letters don't blend in with the background too much.
- Definitely have the track on each side of the sleeve, use the grid to provide consistency throughout letterforms.
Gold Experiments
Incorporating gold into the design, linking to Kintsugi, suggested by crit group to paint the folds of folded paper in with gold paint.
 |
Printed image with paint over top |
- Felt the cracks were highlighted, but was difficult not to get gold on the black parts of the image. If to screen print it would also be really difficult to line up correctly to prevent overlap (if had gold and black as two separate layers).
- The hand painted aspect doesn't look that professional. Seems as though it has been rushed and slapped together - definitely need a different approach.
 |
Painted then printed on top |
- When painted with the gold before printing the black is ontop of the paint, preventing any overlay of the black. Makes the image very high contrast and much more professional.
- The gold paint shows up best when shone under light, has the feel as though it should peel off.
Gold on Sleeve Overlays
Tested the gold onto sleeve as well as images made earlier on in the project to see the impact.

Unfolded paper print with threshold text |
- With these experiments the gold looks overused, it becomes a more primary source rather than secondary due to the large amount of negative space.
- The brush strokes were more obvious on these prints as I used a brush with thicker bristles, I'm like the aesthetic but I also think it takes away from the folded paper prints.

medium text |

small text |
- The brush strokes were really prominent on the sleeve tests.
- The large image of folded paper with the gold doesn't have as much impact as the whole image - text printing with the whole scrunch of paper, as well as text to see impact.
- The text blends in with the background as well, would work well if inner sleeve had more bright text.
To Do Next:
- Test whole scrunch on cover of sleeve
- Experiment with pano band, as well as cut out shapes on gold sleeves
