BRANDING - Invitation Developments

Taking an initial idea of having the invitations for the exhibition be attached to a key ring, similar to when you have a notebook key ring.

Taking inspiration from the posters (by rosie and wilanie) developed for the exhibition, the shapes on these were developed from the shapes of a key cut, tracing the lines and developing a pattern (done by sadie)

Development:

The initial shapes made incorporated the key shape as well as inspiring the positioning of the type within the image.

Trying to get the letters and line to work cohesively on the page, these suited earlier developments of the poster, with a more sporadic style. A hierarchy was established by increasing the weight of the 'low key' text, as it started to blend in to the other shapes and line son the image. Thinking about how blue can be used, as well as allowing for negative space to see what would happen if the paper stock used was a different colour.

Developing a more refined use of the shapes, taken from another early development of the poster which will also inspire the Instagram. The type became difficult to read, and the overall appearance was really busy, it didn't capture the elements of the key as clearly. It needed to be simplified more to allow the typeface to be the main focus on the front and the information on the back.

Taking things back to the basics, developing a way of organising the text within the shape from an earlier idea. The typeface again appeared compromised by the lines weaving across the image, needed to use the line idea in a more simple way.

After consulting with Wilanie we both felt the simple line of the keys should be used as the main focus on the image, it wouldn't complicate the type and would also link to the developments of the vinyl that will be used in the exhibition.
The typeface used within the body text needed to be different as the labels are really small. Helvetica has been used elsewhere within the project so this was continued on to the labels.

Here the line developed at the start of the project was used as a banner, spanning across all the individual labels. The front would be blue and the reverse would have the colour scheme the opposite way around. The weight was increased to see the impact alongside the type, it doesn't add anything, if anything it takes away from the typeface again.

Having a reduced weight gets the point across without distracting from the type or information. Need to consider paper stock.

After referring back to the group the feedback was to print the insides on cartridge paper as it's thicker then the printer paper and would ultimately have a more professional appearance.
Another piece of feedback was to have the front and back to be a thicker material such as mount board or cardboard to provide structure as there aren't many piece of paper so could be a bit flimsy.

Mock-up Production:

  • When printed the text was too close to the edge, would need to be further up into the label as some of the letters got cut off during the production.
  • The type on the back explaining information about the event could be in the same blue colour as the line, as on the front the type is the same colour as the line.
  • The type on the front could do with being in a heavier weight to match the text on the back, as well as the line.
  • When printed, aligning the two together was really difficult so the cut marks for the hole punch didn't align. Need to remove these before printing to make sure no lines are left if a minor mis-alignment happens.
