Module Evaluation

My time management in this module could have done with better planning. I really struggled at the start of the module in studio brief one to get started on the project, I think this was due to the log break from the pace of university over the summer. This left me slightly behind in the module which became more apparent when other briefs (PPP, COP, Studio Brief 2) started to stack up. However, the pace of Studio Brief 2 is much quicker than Studio Brief 1 as the production is undergone digitally.

I think the final production of my final outcome for Studio Brief 1 went well as the finished product looks professionally made for the most part. The binding could've been better if I was more experienced, but on the whole the book looks high quality despite being handmade.

The concept for Studio Brief 2 is strong as well, it places the experience in a context that would suit the location (Edinburgh) it's based on without having the content direct too strongly, allowing it to be performed in other places.

The printing of my publications didn't go as well as I hoped, it took a lot longer than expected and many mistakes happened due to the different printer types (inkjet and laser) that were used. From this I now know the need for printing treated or coated paper when using inkjet printers, otherwise the contrast won't be a high. I'd also allocate more time to getting my documents set up so they're easily accessible more. I did this towards the end of the project (Studio Brief 1) and it made the whole process go a lot quicker, especially in digital print as James has a lot of students to help.

The module overall felt very intense, the briefs were really interesting but with the pace of the course and my slower start to brief 1 it became very difficult to handle at point. The clear weekly breakdowns Dom provided at the start of a new brief was very helpful when having two active studio briefs as it meant I was able to stay on track with Studio Brief 2.

Design for print was a much faster module and had very little, if any, costs for it. Design for Print on the other hand was a very long and very expensive brief. I feel the price of producing a high quality publication was underestimated as you need to produce and test a lot of things physically which nearly always has a cost. The production process is a lot slower for Design for Print than Design for Screen, binding my book took longer than animating my final projection piece.

Overall both briefs were interesting and I felt like I had attempted both with the same amount of enthusiasm. I would have liked to have been able to focus on the practical side more but my time management skills and the nature of the course made this rather difficult.
