Machine for Making Type

What are the qualities of a machine?

  • Uses mechanical power
  • Transmits a force or directs it's application
  • Efficient and well organised group of people
  • Dependent on rules
Task:
Use grid system to develop typefaces for a 4 letter word (50 different types).
Need to think about iteration, collating ideas, deconstructing, and reconstructing.

Initially started with the basics, filling in the grids, keeping it simple to start. Was uninteresting to look at, but sparked ideas.

Played with negative space the collecting the shapes made into a corner of the grid, seeing if it has any resemblance to the original letter.
Testing different  weights of line, seeing the effect of weight on overall appearance.
Not being defined by the grid, using the spaces between and round the grid points to create letter forms.

Started to apply rules, increasing weight by various increments to see what happens to the visuals of the letter.
- Is it still noticeable as the letter?
- Are there any patterns that emerge?
- Is there anything that can be changed for the next test?
- Are there any techniques that could be used to make a machine which creates type?

More unique letters started to form, some legible as the letter P, others not so much.
Pushed rules until letters became unrecognisable, then reconstructing letters to make new shapes.
