Type Specimen Development .1

Name for Type

Type was developed from 3 basic elements of Futura:
- Semi-circle
- Straight
- Dot, altered to become 1/4 circle.
Most versatile components of the typeface.
Combined these elements with the restrictions of an 8 x 6 grid to create each individual letter form.

Inc FT in name for Futura perhaps? Futura developed as wanting something other than gothic or roman type, designed by Paul Renner, designed to be another option for type in Germany.
Research from - 'The Art of Typography', Paul Renner.
Ideas:
Along the lines of being made from modular objects, individual elements, components etc.
'name block'
'name element'
'name slab'
'name modular'
Final name - Zukunft
The word Future (from Futura) being translated to German.

Key Words:

Geometric            Minimal
Constructed          Modular
Components         Dominant
Bold                     Block
Systematic           Methodical

Combination of these words would describe my typeface in its varying forms. Portrays a visual that's true to my typeface.
Other elements involved with the typeface:
  • Even stroke weight through the letters.
  • Each shape is relative in size to the rest of the alphabet.
  • 1/4 circle added to provide detail and unify the letters.
  • Began as arranging 3D shapes.
Rationale
Zukunft is a modular type, developed from 3 major elements of Futura, it has been designed by organising each individual component into an 8 x 6 grid. A straight line to provide backbone for the letters, a curve to retain the organic shapes, and a quarter circle used to provide detail to letters, hinting to the idea of a serif.
The bold dimensions make it ideal for large scale purposes such as posters, billboards and advertising, as well as super-graphics. It's modular roots allow the individual letters to work cohesively as a typeface as well as a unique letter form.

Type Specimen

Idea 1: Will be presented in the same way as rubiks cube instructions, a large sheet of thin paper

folded up into a small rectangle. Each element of the typeface will be explained in a different area of the paper which corresponds to the fold.

Idea 2:  Bound booklet, using pamphlet stitch or staples along the size.
- Black and white bold and chunky, Have black paper to separate pages into groups, mimic block colours of typeface.
- Incorporate colours of rubiks cube as dividers within rationale (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, white).
