Type Specimen Development .2

Final Rationale:

Zukunft is a modular type, developed from 3 major elements of Futura, it has been designed by organising each individual component into an 8 x 6 grid. These components include a straight line to provide a backbone for the letters, a curve to retain the organic shapes, and a quarter circle to provide detail to the letters, hinting to the idea of a serif.

As the typeface is designed using individual components if used for long sentences or paragraphs the reader may get confused, however for large singular words or a small collection of letters Zukunft is ideal for making a powerful impact on the audience. The bold use of a heavy weight make the letters stand out and command a page, as a result the typeface is easily legible on large scale pieces such as posters, billboards and advertising, as well as super-graphics.

Potential inclusion of machine:
The modular roots allow the letters to work cohesively as a unit as well as individual letter forms, the curves and quarter circles round out the shapes thus appearing more welcoming and less intimidating.

The typeface is exposed using a Rubik’s cube. The cube itself uses myriad of algorithms to solve itself, these work as rules directing an individual to match up the coloured squares to form a fully completed cube. The Rubik’s cube has a different letter on each face, 6 letters total, each face is divided into 9 squares, when correctly organised the typeface can be seen. In this instance the human combined with the algorithms are the machine, sorting 54 squares to make 6 letters.

As the alphabet progresses the number of squares per face increases:
3 x 3 grid cube, letters A - F
4 x 4 grid cube, letters G - L
5 x 5 grid cube, letters M - R
6 x 6 grid cube, letters S - X
7 x 7 grid cube, letter Y - Z
As the grid size increases the ability to solve the puzzle becomes more and more difficult.

Layout for Specimen

  • Continue with the idea of 3rd's or 9th's as these are the divisions of a Rubik's cube.
  • Use colour scheme of Rubik's cube within specimen.
  • Steer clear of A4, A5 formats, try and find one that suits the themes running through typeface and machine - think modular, series, 3x3 etc.
