Wes Anderson Typeface - Experimentation

 Hyundai Advert 2012

Anderson directed an advert for the Hyundai Azera in 2012, initially thought of using shapes within the car to made letter forms, such as car windows, but the letters were all varying sizes and had little consistency.

Then tested using the shape of the car as a grid to place letters into for an interesting arrangement. The letters had to be warped to fit into the grid, the shapes made didn't reflect anything anything about Anderson or his style of filming. The shapes were more random whereas Anderson's work is very refined and well considered, felt like a large tangent from initial ideas and didn't communicate well to the audience.

Charlie Brown References

In the majority of Wes Anderson's films there is a reference to Charlie Brown, the most common is the reversal of adult and child roles. This idea of role reversal is particularly noticeable in Moonrise Kingdom, one of the features that stood out is the Khaki Scout Group. The letters made all have elements that cross over, these resemble sticks and look as though you could make them out of twigs, relate back to the scout group a bit.

By looking into Charlie Brown the most stand out details about the character's appearance is  his zig-zag stripe across his jumper, and the curly squiggle for his hair. I wanted to incorperate these shapes into the typeface to see what the effect would be, the results looks very childlike but also incoherent and messy, again very unlike Anderson's work.
