Bitmap Workshop

Took image from New Orleans dock, as this is where Jazz is said to have originated (Jazz is a key component of Neo Soul), and used this for the bitmap process. This produced an interesting repeating pattern of squares, half was all one colour and the other was as if it has been shaded. The overall effect didn't look too original or unique, so I zoomed in even closer. The image was still not very interesting, the repeating pattern was something I had seen before and it didn't feel as though it had a strong correlation to the genre.

Didn't enjoy using bitmap, didn't feel like I had enough images to produce an effective outcome yet - need to collect more images to collage.
Did produce a high contrast image from the close ups of a bitmap telephone mast (taken from an image of New Orleans port - the birthplace of jazz), felt it could work well with the text developed on Tuesday as it has a very grided aesthetic. The overall appearance wasn't as effective as I'd hoped, it looks cheap and unrefined - need to develop if wanting to take further. I don't think the overall look communicates the genre of Neo Soul well, as the image is hash and chunky when Neo Soul is smooth, considered, and fluid.

Extreme close up of image, combined with grided text from Tuesday's exercise

Tried incorporating a grid into the bitmap, creating a sense of organisation within the chaotic dots. I used the floor plan for the ASA Live in Amsterdam, this is the first arena Lauryn Hill performed for her tour of the 20th anniversary of 'the miseducation of Lauryn Hill' - a key album within Neo Soul.
The grid allowed me to separate parts of the image up into sections and see the different patterns within each segment in more detail.

Selections of image, different layers and patterns made
The different sections started to look like a barrel to me, wasn't sure on whether it was effective or not, but each section has some interesting details within them - could use to manipulate in the future.
