Research into Record Sleeves

Diagonal Records

Senzu Beans - Hand crafted packaging, designed by Guy Featherstone
  • Love the brown paper packaging on the cassettes, gives an organic feel the the product. This combined with the green outer band and clear cassettes makes for a clean, natural looking product. - Links to the idea Featherstone wanted to communicate of the senzu bean being a magical product that rejuvenates the consumer.
  • The green outer casing looks like it's made from tape, it has a slight speckle to it matching the brown paper. Paper type exudes the natural aesthetic.
  • Consider paper type thoroughly as it can change the whole aesthetic around the piece, needs to be used for a purpose though.

Another Exhibition at the Modern institute - Designed by Guy Featherstone.
  • The three different colours for the sleeve is something I really liked about this particular sleeve. It was more unusual than others as it meant the same album wasn't just in one form, it varied just a little bit.
  • The red record really highlights the monotone sleeves and allows it to stand out as that is what the music physically on.
  • Think about the different ways of presenting the sleeve in the future if I were to extend the project, maybe create a series if had more money etc.

Guy Featherstone

Powell type - cycle

Powell type - swim

  • Oscar Powell produced his album 'sport' in November 2016, Guy Featherstone developed the branding, and design production for the album release.
  • The typography being turned into a character that can be animated to look as though it is swimming or cycling.
  • The production of this character excelled through the use of merchandise, the usual t-shirts were made, but also bikes were sold as merchandise, the use of context to portray the character was highly executed.
  • Think about the application of the type, the context that it could be seen in, such as animation or mass production.

Goaty Tapes

Golden Teacher - G.D.D.B
  • The interaction between the flat image and the super textured overlay is really interesting, it makes the sleeve look as though it has multiple layers and you could peel them back - could be something to test when making own sleeve (need to have relevance though).
  • The slightly grainy image really pushes the handmade, roughed up aesthetic of the sleeve.

Posh Isolation

Norin - Reflekterar
  • The way the sleeve incorporates the shape of the shape of the record is interesting, its simple but adds a really refined quality to the piece.
  • Think about the small details to change to the sleeve to refine the idea more, experiment with manipulating the actual record sticker as well - could be smaller version of the sleeve?
  • The placement on the type is interesting, why this arrangement? Is it because it works best with the photo? Does it direct your eyes to the information in a specific order?
Vanessa Amara - Manos
  • The tactile element of the paper is really unique, it looks almost as though you could pick up the individual paper pieces - remember in own work can't have a photographic image, think of other ways to develop a similar feel.
  • The white letters are interesting as the background is so pale. The letters don't stand out as much, it's the blue shapes that instantly grab the audiences attention.

Concrete Poetry

Alain Arias - Misson (1956), "egospeak," a bilingual poem
  • The idea of the words relating to sound makes a unique layout, each line increases in length - why? This impacts the poem by creating a sense of increasing intensity or momentum.
  • Could incorporate the beat/pbm of the songs into the text or image - use to manipulate and alter the ordinary configurations to see what happens.
  • The bilingual aspect to the poem is interesting, makes it so more than one group of people can read it - think about in own work (on hiatus kaiyote website they have the text written phonetically on their website due to abnormal pronunciation).

Stephen Bann 'Dominikus Zimmermann' (1964), inspired by the 18th century parish church of Steinhausen built by Zimmermann.
  • The idea of separation between the letters reflects that of the architecture in the building. The poem is meant to communicate the sense of having pattern but no structure.
  • Try and test the division of letters and text within the album cover, if it looks too complicated experiment with the inside design by scaling down and making a repeated pattern.
  • Look at the buildings related to the genre, see if any inspo can be found in the architecture.
