Diorama Research

Diorama - a 3D miniature or full size model.
Typically show historical events, present information is museums of history and science. The natural history museum has many diormamas and consis of three parts:
  1. The painted background
  2. The foreground
  3. Taxidermy specimens
Artist Frank Wong created miniature dioramas that depict the San Francisco Chinatown of his youth during the 1930s and 1940s. Wong constructs his dioramas around a single remembered object from his youth, such as an herb chopper, his grandmother’s apron, or a sign on a laundry door. Wong creatively employs materials such as plastic tubing to make soup or chilli cans, balsa wood to fashion tables, and toothpicks for siding. His dioramas are scaled one inch to one foot.

In 2004, Wong donated seven miniatures of scenes of Chinatown, titled "The Chinatown Miniatures Collection", to Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA). The dioramas are on permanent display in CHSA's Main Gallery:
  1. "The Moon Festival"
  2. "Shoeshine Stand"
  3. "Chinese New Year"
  4. "Chinese Laundry"
  5. "Christmas Scene"
  6. "Single Room"
  7. "Herb Store"
When I was younger we made dioramas as part of a project, made them in a shoe box. Use things that relate to the scene you're depicting e.g. sand or pebbles for a beach.

Could use this within the development of a 'set' to take the photo of the book cover in, incorporate similar element, tin foil planets, pipe cleaners, pom poms etc.
- need to make sure it remains looking professional even when using a childish approach.
