Development of Spaceman and Text
Crit feedback led to the development of type within my design, thinking about how it could be incorporated into the physical image rather than an overlay.Using the origami astronaut as an image for development, including the title and author on the astronaut, as well as a small badge mimicking the NASA logo but replaced with 'Auggie' instead to hint to the main characters love for space.
The text is slightly elevated off the origami man using layers of paper, it adds a sense of depth to the cover.
- the background needs to be considered, how to incorporate the same themes without making the image look overcrowded?
Another way to incorporate text into the image rather than be a separate entity on the page is having the text be the image, or use the text as a background for the image:
- with the text as image it was difficult to find icons that would look enough like all the letters that also related to the film without becoming difficult to read.
- The text as a background was something that looked like it had potential, but would need the image to be the right size so it stands out but doesn't cover too much of the text so it remains legible.
Using the origami man with the text worked well, the text is large enough to be seen, but the typeface needs to be more considered.
- think about the weight of the type as it's the background does it need to take up more of the page or would that look too busy?
Development of 27 Idea
Took 27 different people to write the word wonder:
Decided to combine and split the text into 27 strips to see what effect is has on the word:
The word becomes completely unrecognisable, not ideal for a book cover, but creates an interesting visual.
- Think about how to use within other aspects of the design
Using only 27 point type on the book cover:
The front cover of the book was the only place where 27 point type could be used, on the back it was difficult to do the same as it would fill up the whole page.
