Wonder Initial Ideas Production

LUNCH BOXES/TRAY:

Lots of key moments happen in the canteen so using the objects from that space to represent the different characters. Everyone else in the school is represented by the dinner trays, stacked up all looking the same, Auggie is represented by the lunch boxes. Externally different but fundamentally are the same. 

- idea of having a stack of 27 trays next to a lunch box (as auggie has had 27 surgeries) but couldn't find enough dinner trays. 

Showing the same idea, but the trays are arranged in a more organised format, having everything laid out flat draws attention to the empty space surrounding the lunch box.

Having the lunch boxes on top of the trays suggests being the best even though it's different. The stack of trays would have more impact if there were more trays, again wanted to have a stack of 27 dinner trays but we didn't have access to so many.

CROSS SECTION OF HELMET:

Mock up of having a papier mache helmet, the idea of using childlike production techniques to create the book cover. Having a cross section to show the inside on the outside, as well as having scientific connotations, as Auggie felt more confident when learning/talking about science.

Having the inside on the front of the book and the outside on the back, thinking of ways to play with the idea of outside vs inside without being too literal. Having the blurb fit inside the space helmet on the back, needs to be considered as text will be placed with contrasting black or white. 

Adding stars to further the idea of space, adds depth to the book cover as well as another childlike element. 

 BOOK INSIDE AS THE OUTSIDE:

Having the inside of a book as the outside, incorporating the idea of outside vs inside theme running throughout the book.
- thoughts of having the book be a school text book, filled with science notes as well as info about the book.
- having the text added afterwards looks more professional. 

Having the text handwritten into the book looks more fun and childlike, difficulties with making everything align within the template. Wanting to include the whole book so the audience can really see it's the inside of a book being shown, would need to find a book which fits the template well. 

SCIENCE AND SPACE DIAGRAMS:

Having a scientific diagram, could have multiple icons to demonstrate Auggie's love and confidence for science and space.

- could incorporate with the number of surgeries and create 27 different icons?

OTHER IDEAS:

1. a simple way of demonstrating the space theme, using tin foil, need to experiment with more inventive ways of using tin foil to suggest space. I like the black textured background, could incorporate into any other designs needing texture.

2. the word 'Wonder' altered 27 different times to represent Auggie's 27 surgeries. Could incorporate these ideas into other element of the project, 27 different layers, using only 27pt type size etc. 

3. a seating plan of the classroom with one seat coloured in differently to represent auggie's differences. The colours are typical of a space scene, blues and yellows for the sky and stars. (red line is a mistake from illustrator).
