Research - Data Visualisation Krisztina Szucs

Krisztina Szucs

Parallel Reality 'This project was created to draw attention to the vast differences on how independent government media reports recent demonstrations in Budapest.
On April 12 and 13 I've saved a screenshot in every hour of the Hungarian news sites:
Independent
Propaganda
I've highlighted articles about the recent demonstrations, Central Europeans University, George Soros, NGOs and the trial of Maton Gulvas and Gergley Varga. Having not read most of the articles in detail, I have highlighted elements based on their title and lead in 288 screenshots.'

A demonstration was taking place on 12th April. This is how the sites looked like between 18:00 and 19:00  The three on the left are independent media and the three on the right are the propaganda sites. There is a clear difference in the amount and placement of articles dealing with the event.

Another version: Using colours to highlight the size and placement of the selected articles.

  • The simplicity of the work is what makes it most effective I think, the information is being presented to the audience in the same way as it would be on the website, only this way it highlights a different aspect of the article.
  • The separation by colour of the logo for the newspaper companies allows for a clear differentiation between the information - Think about how to incorporate this into own desing, using colours to separate information.
  • The final poster was posted onto facebook, this was a clever place to leave the information as it can quickly be spread around many people. As the topic is political people will have an opinion on the information and will want to talk about it. - Think about the context of placing word, and how to demonstrate differences.
  • The presentation of information side by side allows for a direct comparison between the two sides. - How can this be included in own work, think about the composition.
Heartstone
'Hearthstone is a free-to-play online collectible card game developed and published by Blizzard.
I visualised the minion cards of all heros in the game. Each element represents one card and their values for cost (mana) health and attack. The card are organised beased on their cost, their release date and the heroes they belong to. A menu helps the user to search for cards using filters for race, mechanics, rarity and sets.

  • The process of developement throughout Szucs' work is extensive, there is a wide range of visuals made for one project, here we some something initially very round and curved become angular. - Keep testing different approaches, develop symbols that can represent something (but more clearly than earlier tests).
  • A common theme in Szuc' work is to animate the data, why so? - What could this add to own work, could try and give personality to shapes based off of what thy represent? Create a symbol for the conversation have it move in the way the conversation develops?
  • There's also a used of colour for highlight in this work, lack of words so colour variation allows a hierarchy to develop. - How could this be applied is text is included?
