Production of Book

Cut the pages down to size and folded them, issues occurred with folding as the paper was so thick it didn't always fold so cleanly. There were some creases within the pages but this could've been avoided if the paper was able to be printed double sided, however there were restrictions with the printing.

When binding the cover of the book the most successful way to emboss was using a clay tool to easy the paper into a stencil. A technique was developed that produced and embossed effect without ripping the paper.
The embossed symbols were more subtle than intended, however if I tried to emboss deeper the paper would rip. The impact is still there but if I were to repeat this I would use the press rather than producing it by hand.

Backing the grey board with cartridge paper posed a few issues. Initially PVA was spread on the grey board and attached to the paper, this produced an extremely flat outcome. However the protruding paper from the embossing got stuck to the glue, reducing the impact.
A second attempt was to put the glue onto the paper first (avoid the embossed patch) then stick to the grey board, this was successful in not sticking the embossed section to the board, but the glue warped the paper making it wobbly.
A final attempt at using prit stick and sticking the paper to the grey board was the most successful.

The Process:

  • A piece of grey board was used to determine the amount of space that needed to be left around the corners so no grey board was visible.
  • The grey board was seen underneath the cover, so a piece of white paper was attached to the grey board before backing so none of the material was visible.

Adhering the pages:

The backing needed to be stuck to the pages, a small tab was left so the pages could stick to the backing without any of the information being lost.
UHU glue was used as it is the strongest and would be able to support the weight of the paper.
Once the fronts were attached they were gathered into position on a second piece of grey board, here the size of the base was determined before being cut and undergoing the same backing process as the front covers. This allowed for the based to be the right size for the pages.

Cover Slip:

The cover slip was printed to wrap around the book to contain the pages, the design was printed onto digigreen 115gsm, a plastic form of paper. This meant the slip was less likely to rip as the book is heavy and bulky.

The sleeve was adhered using a sticker, different ways of making the sticker were tested.
Grammar symbols were cut out of vinyl and used as the sticker to attach the cover. The most successful was the white circle, it linked to the misc symbol for the grammar. Other symbols were tested however it didn't look as effective since the colour wasn't a perfect match.
