Developments + antalis inspo (book layout, paper stock, crit with dom)

ANTALIS
Talk wasn't as inspiring as other talks we've had, but looking in one of their publications it had these inserts that were simple little booklets of imagery or text that were only 4 pages (1 piece of paper folded) and they added a lot to an otherwise very simple publication.

CRIT WITH DOM AND ORLANDO
Main themes that arose:
  • The fringe being an overload of imagery, constantly bombarded with different images.
  • A lot of stuff is just in your face when you're walking around the fringe, people talking to you, singing you songs etc.
  • Trying to get my experience of the fringe across would be something to aim towards.
  • Still conveying this idea of not getting the full picture.
Spoke about the use of tip-ins to emulate this idea of being bombarded with imagery, it also works with the fact that you can't see the full picture of the book as you have to turn though and flick past pages constantly that are always blocking the view of another page.

Made a quick mock-up of this using scrap paper and the perfect binder. The result showed that perfect binding might not be the best way to go as it meant you couldn't open the book flat and so it was really difficult to turn the pages you wanted to. The colour palette was also something that needs to be considered, otherwise the book just looks messy and not thought through (go to scrap for paper then go to other places).

Tried refining it a bit more and adding text to the pages:

Then added imagery as well:

Then adding even more layers to further the effect:

The overall result is really quite nice, the pages still need to be more thought through as to what paper stock and why. Need to find a variety of papers, but ones that still work together.

TO DO NEXT:
  • Find paper stock (at scrap, cass art, fred aldous, paperchase etc)
  • Develop ideas for front cover
  • Make paper
