CLAPHAM HOUSE BOOK
- Has tip-ins in the book, having them centred makes it more difficult to bind.
- Having the tip-ins aligned with the top or the bottom of the page makes it easier to bind, as well as being cheaper if getting the book printed professionally.
- The paper was tracing paper but they were unable to find the correct colour so they just flood printed the green and then printed the white text over the top.
- The layered effect is really really strong, and works within the book, it allows all the spreads to work cohesively as one and don't fight against eachother.
BUSINESS CARD
- This business card was really simple, it was rather long and demanded to be looked at, it isn't something you'd be able to pick up and quickly leave in your pocket and forget. It's size made to remember about it.
- The main thing that stood out was the triple dueplexing of the paper, I'm not sure if this was the exact technique however I think it is as the embossed text couldn't been seen anywhere else on the card.
- The red edges really add to an otherwise simple design, adds intrigue.
UNKNOWN
- This book was empty inside but it was the bind that was so fascinating, it was individual sheets of paper with small hole punches all bound together with an elastic.
- I couldn't quite figure out the bind but it was really unusual and added a lot to the book, it grabbed my attention even though it was blank inside.
HOW TO BUILD A BRANCH
- This book was my Natwest, the cover was deeply embossed grey board with the same texture as wood grain. Was unusual to see such a hard embossing, think about how the limits of processes could be exceeded.
- The bind look like a coptic or kettle stitch bind using red thread, this really highlighted this element of the book. You could really see the different signatures of the book as the pages were different colours, the production of this book wasn't being hidden from the reader, but instead celebrated.
- Again had tip-ins, but this time they were full length but half width, just another way of adding in pages, thinking about how it interacts with the surrounding pages.
NIKE WOMEN'S WORK CUP PUBLICATION
- This publication was made to celebrate the women's world cup, millions were produced, they were part of a collection.
- There was no bind as the content consists of posters and sticker sheets etc. Nike were wanting to avoid using plastic, pressision had been developing this method of encasing by using another sheet of paper which Nike accepted. The paper used to bind then became its own poster so no excess packaging was used.
UNKNOWN
- This book was really interesting, the cover encased a separate couple of pages (on the front and back) then the main content began, was a lovely little insert to have to the book.
- Allows for this separation to be used to the advantage of the content, can add an extra layer to the book.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:
- Using tip-ins to compliment the pages underneath, have them work together instead of fight against each other - this could be a good way of getting the same effect of die cutting without having to do it (due to finances and equipment at uni).
- How the paper stock can be manipulated to the advantage of the content, really help it shine.
- How can these techniques in the book be used to further the content devised for the book?
