Post Crit Development (audio edit + glitches)

Edited the audio file down to 35 seconds in Audacity, took a while to learn the software but got there in the end. Edited it also to contain a little more interesting audio than it originally had (recommended from previous crit at the start of the project).

Thinking about what photos to add over the top of the animated footage. Crit feedback suggested that more loud and intense sounds be coupled with added imagery over top of the sketched animations.

What is heard in the audio:
- chatting
- yelling
- drums
- ambulance siren
(within 35 second clip)

Images found for these:

These were in the top google searched images for the keywords.

I think if these images were placed into the animation, even if just for a split second they would look very out of place and very odd. Need to be edited in one way or another to not have such a stark contrast.

Next edited them in Audacity, this didn't go to plan as the images online all looked vaguely like the original photo as well as being in colour. However, when I edited my photos they all came out as looking like white noise, there wasn't any depth or even recognition of the original image:

drumming
Yelling

Chatting

ambulance

Thinking these could be presented over the animation, flashing and glitching when that sound comes on the audio. It could cover the whole container to really have an impact, maybe edit the photo to have higher contrast?

Edited these glitches to be one after another, thinking it could break the serene feeling of the animations:
Glitch one is less intense as it varies in colour only slightly and is the same glitch repeated (yelling glitch), whereas glitch two uses all 4 glitches to create a more intense feeling within the audience.

While animating it got repetitive having these glitches as full squares over the whole animation whenever there was a dramatic sound in the audio.
To counteract this I edited the original sketch animations to have the glitches going on where the black ink was (see below). This added more depth to the work and meant that specific speech could be edited in such a way for it be able to stand alone without any full screen glitches.

If videos aren't working here are the youtube links:

When these were added into the animation long side the full screen glitches there was a lot more dynamic movement happening.
The glitchy imagery really represents how the audio feels, but the more calming sketch animations represents how I felt when in the space.

Edited animation:

Where to go next?
  • Adding in the original images somehow? Feel as though this may look a bit odd, but need to test. Add inside existing animation to see how the glitches interact with them, play with opacity and where the image is layered within the animation.
  • Adding in text for the audio that is heard? This could be a way to add a more harsh structure to the animation, could go across whole screen in the background to add some context.
    Statements heard in audio clip:
    - Doesn't matter.
    - Right now.
    - Someone was like.
    - No it wasn't.
    - Should be adults.
