Research - Iannis Xenakis, Under the Skin, Stranger Things

Iannis Xenakis
Xenakis came late to learning about music theory, which allowed him to ignore the majority of the rules of composition. He constructed his worksnusing laws and formulas of the physical sciences, he sought to control his music at every instant.

'At first he depended on the use of mathematical models of disorder. By using calculations derived from, say, the numbers of different-sized pebbles on a shore, Mr. Xenakis could determine the pitches of notes or their placements in time. In this way he could create music with chaotic inner detail but a decisive shape or impulse.' - new york times

He develops graphic scores as a result.
- This could be something to experiment more within the animations, this idea of having something else happening or influencing the sounds.
- Look at the peaks and troughs in the audio and have these influence the animations, adding a factual basis to the works.

Under the Skin
It was suggested I research into a specific part of Under the Skin by Louis in a crit on Friday.
I presented my group with a white on black version of my animations, this was initially meant to be used for double projections. However when I showed my crit group the imagery they said it would suit the VR side of the project as it has no horizon, it is endless.

The scenes in Under the Skin, have the same effect, they create a sense of endless depth, as if the characters are in a completely different dimension to out own. It is a very transformative was of capturing people in space as it looks as though there is nothing at ll. We can't see the beginning or the end.

Stranger Things
When I saw the scenes in Under the Skin it became very clear they're the same as 'the void' scenes in the Stranger Things franchise.

As I've seen stranger things I know in more detail how these scenes are used. They're when one of the characters goes in a sensory deprivation tank and transports her mind to another place in time. The use of the black void is a very clear way of demonstrating where the character is, as it is unknown to her and to others.

- The use of the black space creates a sense of endlessness, this could be a good use for the VR experience as there is no beginning and no ends.
- With the white animations over the top it'll keep things looking professional.
