Page layout:
Trying to add the route in the background to the pages, then we can add text and image around them. Traced the route using chinagraph pencil to relate to the hand drawn signs found in bikini beach books.
When adding to the pages the route was too large and could spread across the pages.
Needed to make it long and thin so it can span across the whole spread of the book:
Again, this didn't fit and was too thick and a low quality image.
Needed to think of a way around this:
- large scale drawing and high quality scanner
- digitally draw using a textured brush on Photoshop
Cover:
- Using textures?
- would need to put textures in the book, as well, would this work? - Terracotta to link to the tiles in the bay?
- Taking the shape of the bay?
- text could follow in this direction.
1. Inspired by shape of the bay:
- shape is a bitmapped screenshot of Gordon's Bay, the colour's changed to terracotta to match the tiles on the porch of the shop.
- adding text around in the shape of the coast or that follows the shape itself.
- think the bitmapped texture is a nice addition to the cover, separates it from the rest of the book.
- the text looks good, but doesn't relate to the inside pages, theres a sense of disconnect here.
2. Changing the type to suit the inside:
- having the text arranged in a way that matches the inside of the zine.
- the text is arranged to read like the spine of a book as well as flat.
- the shape looks a little out of place with this configuration but is the most successful so far.
- rosie and lani suggested having the text repeat and stack like the books in the store.
3. Stacked text like books:
- having the text repeated next to each other with little column space was really difficult to read.
- when they had more breathing space the overall outcome was easier to see what the text said, worked better as a title.
- experimenting with a colour scheme or the background based off of rosie's devised colour scheme, these weren't as effective as the previous tests.
4. Adding in image:
- adding in an image from the bay, as well as textures developed from google image screenshots, this combined with the text layout works rather well.
- the colour scheme also has a strong link to the inside colours.
- more refined without the textures.
- thinking if the texture is added it should be much more subtle and in a grey tone instead.
