"My wife’s uncle explained they were just full of old beer mats and due to be taken to the dump. Looking inside, I discovered the crates and boxes were full to the brim with neatly organised beer mats, all in great condition and labelled by brand or country, a graphic designer and type nerd’s dream. I offered to take them and was now the owner of 1,000+ beer mats.”

"I love the typography and illustration. The collection is a real mixed bag of styles from very modern and minimal through to very traditional and twee."

  • Need to think about the application of type alongside imagery, do I need to incorporate imagery if the type has a similar visual aesthetic to the original illustration.
  • Found the different arrangements of type and image interesting as there are so many different arrangements even within a standard square format.
  • Think about how to use the text within the format, experiment with different arrangements.
  • Surprised by the amount of fun and playful designs within the mats, thought they would be more serious as they're related to alcohol, and only sold to adults.
  • Keep the playful element incorporated within the design, doesn't need to be serious just because it's for adult. Humour is important as well.
  • The idea of a series of mats is interesting, think about the impacts of this, how could this be incorporated using the figures Kat's drawn.

Drawing a similarity between the designed function of the letter and the chair’s, Thomas evaluates: “A chair should fulfil its purpose, ie to be able to sit on it, otherwise it becomes more like a sculpture (which can be a purpose in itself.) Renewing the chair is one of the most difficult tasks I can imagine. In that respect, I see similarities with the alphabet. It’s exciting to see how small aspects in their design change the perception of a letter and how letters combined can shift our ability to read a message or word.”

- Thinking about own project, reevaluate the layout when thinking about posters and advertising.
- Stop thinking about central placement, begin to experiment with format and layout within something traditional, how can you make it more interesting?
- Going back to typeface, take the shapes and apply to a more unique typeface, doesn't need to be some that already exists, be careful when running the risk of not being legible.
- DON'T BE SCARED TO EXPERIMENT!

Significance of Numbers:

There is something fundamental in the fact that nature and everything that surrounds us is based on numbers and codes,” The structure of the medium is a constant intrigue, but it also allows him to play with the dualism between control and chaos, a signature element across his bold work.
