Brief of the Week 2 - Wednesday Group Work

Everyone went away to produce different style visuals that could be used across the different items within the subscription package based on the colour and shapes previously decided.

Mel:I went for a more fine art, Bauhaus aesthetic with the shapes to give some interesting contrasting options for the group to choose between when we got together to decide which one was most appropriate. Spaces below provided space for the calendar grid. Sense of layering and depth. Colours that were chosen by the group have been used but they don't feel cohesive. The colours combined and style of these pieces is also not very simple and means the customer base would be reduced to a finite number of people who appreciate this style. It was acknowledged that it needs to be more simple and appealing to a wider range of people.

Evie:
- The route taken was more clean and simple, the shapes themselves were very basic, comprised of squares, circles and semi circle.
- I wanted to try and push the amount of different patterns and forms while only using 3 simple shapes.
- The outcomes were very clean and crisp, the colour palette also lent itself well to the serene feel you get from the shapes.

Eleanor:
- Eleanor had adopted a similar approach to the visuals as Evie, developing more repeating patterns as well as using basic shapes.
- Eleanor had also composed some pieces that were inspired by the visuals found on pinterest of collating a variety of shapes and lines to form a visual.
- The designs were treading the line between childlike and sophisticated (this turned out to be an ongoing theme within this area of design).

Tom:
These designs came later from Tom after we started developing the neon concept with Bobby. These are somewhat in between the very simple designs using shapes and light colours and layout and the more complicated more developed neon, very 'graphic design' aesthetic which may be too strong of an aesthetic for a large target audience base

Bobby:
- This was one of the aesthetics that felt too primary school with the colours of dark blue and light blue. The type Futura also comes across as contributing towards the childishness level, despite the fact that it is bold, simple and modern, feels like a clean slate.
- It was recognised that it was the colour scheme within the aesthetic that was making most if not all of the designs from each person feel childish and too associated to schools, and so a drastic change was made towards experimenting with neon colours.

- After changing the colours we played around with the shapes in a way that would create depth and a more mature, adult feel to the aesthetic.
- Mezzotint was used to produce this
- Realising that printing on neon coloured paper would produce a better result (and cheaper), the colours were reduced to monochrome black and white, however with white a colour that cannot be printed, the design simplified further with just black.
- The black in the mezzotint was made the dominating shade, as it was noted that the white would print pink.

- The type was made larger on the page to match the impact of the shapes.
- The type became a large feature of the piece and so repetition and filling the page with this text was tested:

- Those with fully black mezzatint were less successful and the shapes felt flat and one dimensional
- The layering of shapes and the different arrangement of text in the yellow piece (see below) also worked together in creating a strong visual outcome, however this would not be appropriate for a general layout for all different forms (eg. calendar, needs room for grids, to do list, room for writing etc.)
- These pages would be appropriate for the front and backs of various items
- Should there be a range of colours the customer can choose from when they start their subscription? Or should it be a collection of different colours?
- Calendar is alternating, but customer can choose which planner/to do list/watch)

CALENDAR = GREEN, PINK, YELLOW, GREEN, PINK YELLOW ETC.

- Experiment, feels a bit feminine with the pink alongside what feels like sparkly tiles. Somewhat too decorative?
- We need to find a way around this issue.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

- Coloured neon paper means calendar grid cannot be on the coloured side.
- This means changing the design of the calendar from on the right with the pic on the left, to having the calendar grid fully landscape on the back side of each image
- As you flip through it the picture at the top is on neon and the calendar page below is on the back of the next month image OR  what if the customer can choose which image they look at whilst on a month?
- Flip book quality, which means that this becomes less complicated in layout and printing.

=> Playing with the gradient, noise in shapes for a more simple layout that can be used across all platforms (developed by Evie)

- Interesting faces that could be repeated across each month to be slightly different?
- Might get boring after a while
- Have potential to be taken further if developed more

STRUCTURE FOR CALENDAR
Structure and direction for the visual imagery
Squares and triangles for winter months
Circles and semi circles for summer months

PLAN:
- Complete creating shape visual imagery for calendar visual pages
- Complete layout of planner and to do list
- Put all together
- Print and bind

DOM FEEDBACK:
- Could the front cover move and animate simple to count down towards the release of the product and subscription??
