Significance of Numbers - Development on Scans

Taking the previous scans and trying to develop them forward, thinking about making a typeface form the scans as well as how the technique could be incorporated, what could be improved etc.

- Tracing the creases of the scrunched paper and thinking how these can be incorporated into the exhibition branding.
- Letters starting to appear, but very abstract, need to take the shapes out of context to see what develops.

- The top is all the same weight (1pt stroke) and the second has a combination of 1pt stroke and 2.45pt stroke (linking back to the scaling up of inches and centimetre).
- The letters developed are very sketchy, they look like they've been drawn by a child.
- This isn't the aesthetic that people initially think of when they think maths, is this a good thing?
- Does it need to be more directly related to maths?
- Think the scaling is an interesting, but would appear better in a different context.

- Here trying to apply the different ideas of scaling to a typeface, this is a good starting point to spin off of.
- The difference in weight is a strong element, this could be used throughout the branding.
- What is missing is the 'random' element (inspired by the imperial system). Needs to have something that alters the rules made to create a more sporadic aesthetic.
- Could employ the split scanning technique like ones that I used in 402 for the film screening poster.

- Here implementing the idea of having the type change constantly, this could be for the website or promotional material?
- Would need an animator to work on it so it is smoother and because I'm not really sure how to edit footage very well.

Thinking about how the type could also be manipulated using a photocopier:

- The photocopier was very quick at scanning, making it difficult to control what was happening to the letters. Whether this is a bad thing I'm not sure as it meant the results were a lot more random.
- The outcomes were interesting, some unique things began to happen to the letterforms, new  elongated anatomy started to appear.
- Feel as though is I had more control the outcomes would be more varied as I'd be able to test different movements (try with scanner).

Testing with scanner:

- The scanner was much slower so I had more time to move the paper around.
- The results were really varied depending on how I moved the paper, I really like when the letters get all squished but then stretched, it's a nice variety.
- Would be interesting to see the letterforms by themselves, isolated from everything else.
- Would these work with animations? (talk to an animator).
