- Developing rules within the typeface, thinking of the base 12 system (imperial) and base 10 (decimal) as well as scaling by 2.45.
- Have rules dictate different elements of the typeface, trying to make something more regulated than the photocopy scans.
Base 12 (Imperial) System:

Base 10 (Decimal) System:

- Using the base as a grid to develop the typeface (can only use 12 or 10 squares).
- Creates bizarre looking letterforms, interesting shapes having to be made to use up the space.
- When using the letters there isn't much of a noticeable difference between the two systems.
- The overall aesthetic isn't very strong, it needs to be developed further.
- Could these be scanned? Made into a more 'bonkers' typeface?
Trying to think about other ways of presenting this idea of the difference between the two systems, how could this be highlighted?
- weight
- size
- colour
- fill
- anatomy
![]() |
Alteration to size. The first piece of text is 2.45 time smaller than the second piece of text (the size difference between inches and centimetres). |
![]() |
The weight is altered, the difference again is the same as between inches and centimetres (2.45). |
![]() |
Here thinking of altering specific parts of the anatomy of the typeface, again presenting the difference there is between the two systems. |
![]() |
Here he text is two different colours, one 24.5K and the other 100K, again showing the difference between the two systems. |
Reflections:
- Feeling like they're flat, need more to them, think about the facts learnt within research, how could this influence the project, what were the key themes?> scaling
> maths in relation to humans
> symbols being used instead of numbers
> adding and subtracting to make new numbers
> history behind the numbers
How could these become part of the branding?
> Scaling - to create a hierarchy, the size difference in previous test was a good way to develop a body text size and title size.
> Maths in relation to humans - could be how the audience would interact with the exhibition through wayfinding,
> Symbols being used instead of numbers - an old system could be redeveloped and used as the numbering for the exhibition. Individual pieces, for the different floors, etc.
> Adding and subtracting to make new numbers - again within recreating an old number system, this would most likely adopt this method.
> History behind the numbers - could show the progression throughout the exhibition?
What am I wanting to portray?
- the ridiculousness of the imperial system (compared to the decimal system)
What is the best way to do this?
- Needs to be so people can experience it for themselves, as well as there be a stark difference between the two.
Is exhibition branding the best way to go?
- Potentially if the way it is communicated is strong enough.
- Ask crit group this.
