Significance of Numbers - Inside Pages, Markings etc

>After talking to my peers it became clear that having the text only be the conversions within Leeds felt flat. There was no context to the statements this needed to be added.
- Thought of having more information about the history included in the publication, as there are 10 pages it definitely felt as though there was room for this.
- I went back through my research and pulled up the information that goes back to a royal basis. The text provides more of a history into the system, before presenting the information itself.

> When looking through old medieval documents many had the line markings drawn onto them, so people writing out the text would be able to keep everything uniform.
 - Really like the mathematical element this brings to the text, could incorporate this into own project.

> Also another element within the medieval publication was the breaks in text these were either a different colour type or for a decorative capital letter.
 - Began to experiment with these previously and I really liked the result, think it is something to continue with.

  • Here with the text in an organised box I think it shows a relation to traditional text, however with the sans serif font they look slightly out of balance.
  • In initial ideas thinking about showing the history through different typefaces could maybe implement this.

  • The black letter type is the oldest typeface, it's also the hardest to read. Still want the type to be legible and the blackletter makes this more difficult to do.
  • Having a range of typefaces within the publication could make the whole thing look very disconnected, maybe stick to one or two?
  • The serif type looks really effective within the marking.
  • Wanting to keep the numbers as black letter, this links to the history as well as keeping the inside pages having a connection to the posters.

  • Thinking that the pages could alter slightly through the book, depending on the context.
    - Thinking the history pages could be laid out like this, however there are 5 spreads within the zine, the history will take up 3 if arranged like this.
    - Leeds in context pages could be arranged differently, more of a map inspired arrangement? They could also be in a more modern typeface, trying to transition?
  • Maybe could join 2 of the history pages together so they take up 2 spreads instead?
  • The pages look too distant from one another, the image and text don't link, need something to tie the two together.
GETTING STUCK NEED TO RESEARCH AND HAVE CRIT

> Tried adding a time stamp on the image side of the page.
 - This brought the text across and made it connect the image to the type more.
- Still not enough though, think the grid is separating the two a lot.

> Here having the text and image work alongside each other, they bleed over the page, making the two look more cohesive as a unit.
 - The boxed images have been changed also, so that they place better amongst the text.
 - Think this layout is better than before.
 - Also like the historical element being included, wanting to present the history in a way that fits.

I think presenting the project through my outcome is what could be most interesting. The information I've found out is bonkers, and really doesn't make much sense as to why we use the system now.
Presenting the information through the pages of the zine, and then the design interpretation through the posters feels like the best way to approach the publication.

> Did an experiment to look at decorative boarders using the images.
 - lots of publications used to have very decorative boarders surrounding the text.
 - using this as another way to incorporate the text and image together.
 - reminds me of playing cards as they're royal figures, not sure if that's an issue?
 - also the layout works better with smaller paragraphs of text, maybe something to bear in mind.
