Portfolio Tips and Tricks & Planning

General Rules:
  • Remember to be playful when photographing work.
  • Avoid using mockups
  • Think about sequencing, do you need a cover page?
  • Start and end strongly
  • For each project include a short description of the brief and concept (similar to a rationale but use more reasoning for your design decisions).
  • One project per page, try to keep images big to see work, no more than 3 pages per project, this stops it being repetitive. Need to show something different in each photograph.
  • Less is more, don't overcrowd.
  • It's okay to have one big image on a page.
  • Have landscape (A4 300 dpi).
Photographing work:
  • Try to use natural light.
  • Don't shoot from too low down, get high up.
  • If in doubt use a top down set up.
  • Natural light can be just as good, use a good window, same background, same position, taken on the same day.
  • Somethings are okay for scanning, flat posters, flyers etc.
For Digital Work:
  • If they're moving, add to a pdf.
  • Mock ups can be okay fro things like apps etc.

What Have I Got to Include in my Portfolio?

> EdFringe Publication
 -
Photograph, play with angles/top shots.
> EdFringe Projection
 -
Having the mock up done for design boards would be fine to show this.
> BoW1 Bikini Beach (publication)
-
Again top shot photograph as well as some experimental shots, should show close up of bind as well as page details.
> BoW2 New Years Resolutions
 -
Need to have the to do list well lit, think about how to make the cover more clear.
 - Do I need to include everyone elses? need to photograph in the same way.
> Bow3 ?
> Camden Brewery (poster, beer mat, beer can, print, animation)
> Significance of Numbers (publication)
 - Scans of print side/or presented on a wall.
 - photographed publication.

> Close ups, showing specific details of the work, not just how it looks overall, demonstrating the concepts.
> Top shot photography to show the overall appearance.

> Again showing the theory/ideas/ development behind a final outcome, can be presented on the same page to provide more context.
> Top shot photography being used for book cover, shows it as it is.

> Presenting physical objects in a more organised fashion, creating patterns using the objects?
