Significance of Numbers - Textures, Inside Page Development

> Having illustrations or textures added to the text to make it more interesting.
 - the overall appearance is very different to the posters, it's more gritty rather than structural.

 - would they work better if cut into sections to fit in between the text?

> More of a blocked out vibe with these, doesn't seem to have much of a connection to the posters.
 - gives some direction to the text, makes it easier to read, makes it in the format of the traditional justified text.
 - maybe use a line, just to signify the route/journey
 - could put dashes on them every inch/barleycorn?

(1) having the spaces between the text filled with lines.
 - it pays homage to the traditional medieval layout as well as making it easier to read the text.

(2) Trying to demonstrate the scale aspect of the imperial system in a similar way to the posters.
  - links to the posters, but looks pretty random when placed amongst big gaps.

(3) Again trying to represent the scale even further with the use of different sized type within the same sentence.
 - again makes it more confusing to read, it does communicate the sense of scale but in doing so it's lost the medieval structure.

(4) The scaling being represented through varying type size only.
 - communicates the idea of scale well, but loses again the structure and doesn't excite the audience really.

(5) Having the lines included but there be marks on the lines as to where that length ends, so the distance from point to point is representative of the measurement being described.
 - doesn't necessarily make sense, why id this needed? is it needed? does it just confuse the audience further?

(6) Again with the markers, but without the lines.
 - i think this is even more confusing, it simply looked random, it doesn't look like it has anything to do with measurement at all.

> with all these designs, need to bare in mind that they will be printed in white ink on black paper.

> A lot of different alterations of the page layout, thinking about what would be best, all caps? lower case? blackletter? sans serif? lines? no lines? combination of type? varying sized type? same type different weight? a combo of both?
 - all the questions and figuring out what i think is most appropriate needs to be done next.

What am I wanting to achieve?
 - wanting to educate the people reading the zine.
How am I wanting to do this?
 - presenting information about the imperial measurement system in a way that makes people realise how bonkers it is.
Elements from research to include?
 - Medieval layout and typeface (keep typeface exclusive to numbers
 - The theme of scaling within the zine.

The sense of scaling doesn't need to be all on one page, it could be across all pages in the zine.
 - not in a cohesive order, could be random like the system.
 - if one side was text the other could be image and could also be scaled differently.
 - images of the places mentioned in the text.

There are 5 spreads, a front and back, and 3 posters within the zine.

>Testing with thresholded images to stick with the black and white, high contrast theme.
 - need to look into what the black and white printer can do, figure out how well it can handle a range of tone.
- Like the cropped in element, working with images off of the internet it makes it more intriguing, has that investigative element to it.

(1) has the lines and a consistent text
 - i don't think this one is as successful when placed with the image.
 - it distracts and almost looks too linear with the gritty imagery.
 - as well when looking t it compared to the posters it doesn't seem to have the same aesthetic.

(2) Has no lines but has the black letter numbers.
  - the black letter being kept to the numbers only links in well to the posters.
  - the idea of scale is lost within this rendition, something needs to be altered.

(3) Has the scaled size text and the blackletter numbers.
 - Think this is heading in the right direction.
 - don't want to edit it too much so that the grid gets ignored, but feel as though the scaling element could be taken to more extremes.

> Thinking of doing something like this, having the images and text change scale on the page.
 - with the size of the items does the text need to demonstrate the sense of scale?
