Overall the module was challenging in many ways, but it allowed me to learn a lot. One of the biggest challenges was the collaborative element to the briefs. Within the briefs of the week it was easier to get work done quickly as we were working with people on the course who had to dedicate time to the same brief. In regards to my chosen briefs (Camden Town Brewery and the Significance of Numbers) the collaborative element made it harder to have as quick a turn around as I was relying on people who didn’t have as much drive as myself. Since they were from other courses with their own deadlines finding people willing and getting responses was difficult. This also impacted time management, when relying on someone else to produce work and develop a project with you it makes it a lot slower. I think I managed my time rather well during this project, I did struggle during employability fortnight as having multiple timetabled sessions in uni as well as working on PPP interviews threw me off balance with my Responsive projects. I ended spending a bit longer on Camden than I was expecting party due to getting finalised illustrations from Ekaterina who I was collaborating with, as I hadn’t factored in her time fully, and trying to balance other projects as well as employability fortnight. This did impact my second brief, especially as it took awhile for me to navigate the brief in its infancy.
I believe my Camden project answered the brief well, the required print is bright and really displays the word fresh clearly, the additions I made to the project, beer labels, posters, beer mats etc lifted the brief to another level as well as challenging me to think about the wider applications of my work. The Significance of Numbers brief took a route I believe was appropriate to my project, I didn’t want to fight the research I had done surrounding the brief so it felt right to incorporate it into the final outcome. The brief requested rigorous sketchbook work, which I have succeeded in but more so in the form of my blog. As my work pace needed to be quick it made more sense for me to document the development of my project on my blog. I believe the project allows the audience to see the imperial system with new eyes as they learn about its origin, the format of the outcome (a posterzine) mirrors this by not only being a publication, but also a series of posters.
I have enjoyed the collaborations within the project, despite the extra stress it sometimes adds. The briefs of the week made a good change to the projects we’d been working on for a while. I particularly loved the book in a day brief we did with Jo Gilmore, it re birthed a quick thinking creativity that can be forgotten about when doing a longer brief. The time restraint also allowed for a low pressure result, I wasn’t worried about the appearance of the outcome which in turn encouraged more risk taking.
