Development From Friday Poster Task - Further Research, Idea Generation (The Rodina)

Thinking about the idea of hijacking the different systems we do subconsciously and making another system notice them.
- educating people on complex systems going on inside their body that they don't know is happening (this could be the way of educating people on complex systems).
  • The tactility of my poster was interesting, highlighting the system we do with our eye, with our hands - wanting to develop this more.
  • The second almost "study" I did of where people looked when they looked at a poster was interesting - how could this be continued further?
Wanting to focus on adults rather than children, feel as though there is a lot of interactivity about scientific process for children so I would be adding to the mass that already exists. Want to make something new for adults.

Dom Research for Masters:

Bringing attention to the physical experience of reading and the potential of the physical book to communicate.

^Reading – Paratexts Paratexts are texts which frame the main text of the book. For example, the title, authors name, the preface. (Genette, 1997)

- This idea of the structure of a page dictates how we read it, really like the idea of playing on this sense of being directed around a book.
- How could this be manipulated? Using type and texture?

The way Dom's project was conducted very much focused on the physical experience of reading a book. What your hands did and bringing this to the audience's attention.
- Interesting to see the results of these tests into how people interact with books, can use this within project, thinking about where we touch a page and highlighting this using a different system such as sight?

Somaesthetics:
Feel I need to understand this more as a concept to be able to fully apply this to my project.
As an amalgamation, ‘somaesthetics’ “implies a project of appreciating and cultivating the body not only as an object that externally displays beauty, sublimity, grace, and other aesthetic qualities, but also as a subjectivity that perceives these qualities and that experiences attendant aesthetic pleasures somatically”.
- the main focus is the idea of having the body perceive aesthetic qualities through experience, not simply looking.

The Rodina:
Visitor is Present

- Find this really interesting, the whole piece presents the body as a piece of art, in the way the images are constructed, as well as the interactivity.

- Love the involvement of the audience in the work. It gets people thinking about the piece more in a tangible way rather than having the art be something we can't touch.
- The restrictions really make the audience think about where to place the stickers in relation to the bodies on the piece, and then use their bodies to place the stickers.

Before

After

It's interesting to see where people placed the stickers, it shows common trends in thought as well as physical traits of the people who placed the stickers.
- very few placed high up, many placed on a central strip (shows the heights of the participants).
- lots interact with the pose of the characters, making it look as though they're shooting a laser beam from theirs hands/eyes, or balancing the orbs etc.

Really interesting to see how people interact with the piece, using their own bodies, minds to make decisions about the art that creates a whole new piece.

- Love the interactivity, encouraging adults to play with the art.
- Simple but effective design choices also add to the effectiveness of the piece, colour palette, composition etc.
- The audience becomes apart of the design, making a picture become a piece of performance art.

What do I want to achieve in the project?
- Want to make people aware of the complex systems happening within us that we don't notice.

Blurting Ideas:
- poster highlighting the eye tracking using tactile material
- publication highlighting the hand movements using words in its place
