Somaesthetics
We humanist intellectuals too often take the body for granted because we are so passionately interested in the life of the mind and the creative arts that express our humanity and spiritual longings. But the body is not only an essential dimension of our humanity (expressing all the ambiguities that humanity entails); it is also the basic medium through which we live and the fundamental instrument for all performance, our tool of tools, a necessity for all our perception, action, and even thought.
When I speak of body in this essay, I mean the soma that is both an object in the world and a subject that perceives the world including its own bodily form.
I perceive and act in the world rather than an object in it. But sometimes I use this somatic subjectivity to explore my body as an object, as when I use my eyes and hands to examine a bruise on my knee, seeing the colour with my eyes and feeling the bump with my fingers.

the somatic senses and desires have been repeatedly condemned for both misleading our judgement and distracting our attention from the pursuit of truth.
The basic somaesthetic logic here is that rather than rejecting the body because of its sensory deceptions, we should try to correct the functional performance of the senses by cultivating improved somatic awareness and self-use, which can also improve our virtue by giving us greater perceptual sensitivity and powers of action.
- Our bodies allow us to experience the world more when we pay attention to what's happening.
- We can see our bodies as objects themselves and how they interact with other objects.
- Maybe somaesthetics can be my complex system, this relationship between thought/mind and body?
Touch and Feel Books
A lot of the reading made me think about childrens sense activities, there are loads of these especially for young children.
Touch and feel books came to mind as an idea, they're books that incorporate different textures and colours to engage children and help them learn.

Thinking of potentially developing a touch and feel style book for adults? It would be more refined and play on the themes of somaesthetics, bringing different senses attention to each other.
- could incorporate fabric or textured elements into a book where the eyes normally go, and the text where the hands go?

An exhibition inspired by the publication of the doctoral thesis by Frederike Huygen
'a celebration of pioneering designer, art director and typographer Juriaan Schrofer, whose relentless experimentation pushed the boundaries of visual communication in dynamic and exciting directions. Alongside a collection of his work, Dutch studio LUST have created an interactive installation which pulls in relevant news stories related to specific locations to create a kind of information portrait.'
- The piece is really interesting, it seems as though it isn't interactive with the audience but with incoming news titles.
- It creates a really overwhelming experience as a member of the audience, I'd feel s though it would make you very aware of your sight and what's happening around you.
something like this could be made that incorporates the audience, could be a projection mapping piece that responds to the movement of the audience members. Making them aware of what their bodies are doing without actually seeing their own bodies.

'Others use reflections and shadows to play with the way we perceive and interact with the world.'
- Thinking about these interactive installations and how they make the audience feel, how do people react to them, how are their senses effected? Which ones most?
- Really push the realm of a creative space, and our involvement with design. Like the quote states, incorporates our reflections and shadows and how we perceive the world. I think this is a really interesting way of incorporating the idea of somaesthetics.

> The spectator becomes the audience. The work is dependent on the spectator.
- Is very philosophical when approaching work. Reflects on self process of developing artworks and how they developed from thoughts.
> Work developing a rainbow, the work needs to have a spectator otherwise there can't be a rainbow. A rainbow depends on the audience's eye being there.
- This makes the audience a key member of the piece.
- The weather project and yellow light is simply amazing. It presents reality in a completely new way, it's an experience like no other that exists in life.

The body becoming part of the art/design as a way to encourage the recognition of our own biological complex systems happening within us.
