Paper Type Experimentation

Looking into different paper type to see the effect on the image overall, wanting to test a lot of different types of paper to see if any have an impact on the colour scheme or the overall presentation of the sleeve.
Outer sleeve looked at:

  1. Sugar paper (various colours, sand tone, grey tone)
  2. Newspaper
  3. Gridded paper
  4. Cartridge paper
  5. Brown paper

The newspaper didn't add anything to the design, it added more colour which distracted from the use of the gold and made it seem more mundane. The text on the newspaper also distracted from the text on the sleeve, since the newspaper text reads more easily.

Blue gridded paper was very cold against the warm gold tones, the grid links back to the 3x7 grid text - could do with more development, maybe test with different size grid.

All impacted the colour of the gold differently, the darker the paper the less impact the gold had, it became less metallic and more of a brassy orangey colour, particularly on the brown ribbed paper.

The sugar paper had a slight grain to it, the paper wasn't textured so wouldn't affect the print, but it has a speckle which worked well with the gritty texture from the folded paper print.

Cartridge and grey sugar paper worked the best as they didn't distract from the print but made the sleeve look more thought out and considered than plain white printing paper.

Overall thoughts:

  • Use the a variety of sugar paper when printing, but use neutral colours or earth tones, doesn't distract from the visuals, but makes it more appear more professional.
  • Test with weight of cardstock when constructing the outer sleeve, could stick screen prints onto thicker card to appear more polished.
