- text format dictated by medieval publication layout.
- framed text with images
- drawn on lines for text format
Whether this should be done in 1 of these 3 styles?
Need a clear narrative for the publication, this way it'll be easier to decipher which method would be the most appropriate approach.
Having the history, as well as Leeds in context would be good, places the information in a way that people can easily comprehend.
Maybe instead of Leeds only it could be general places in the UK? Then wouldn't be a thing that people could relate to as much. Thinking of this being published, there could be different editions depending on location (only the location pages would change).
Thinking baxck to what bry said about maths in the everyday, maybe bring distances down, think about objects instead of just travelling places?
The boarder layout pays more of a homage to the traditional publication, would also mean the history pages don't take up as much space, could have 2 spread history, centre spread conversion, final spreads context?
- During the reign of King Edward II in the early 14th century the inch was defined as "three grains of barley, dry and round, placed end to end lengthwise."
- During the reign of Elizabeth I in the 16th century the rod (5.5 yards or 16.5 feet) was defined as the length of the left feet of 16 men lined up heal to toe as they emerged from church.
- It was during the reign of King George IV that the Weights and Measurement Act came into effect. This act along with another in 1878, established the British Imperial System.
- This system is still used in countries across the globe today. In the UK all road distances use miles, and pubs sell pints of beer, laptop screens is always denominated in inches, food sold by length or width e.g. pizzas is generally sold in inches, similarly with clothing.
To put things into more context:
- The distance from KIRKSTALL ABBEY TO PARKINSON BUILDING is 2.52 nautical miles or 15,312 feet.
- THE DISTANCE FROM KIRKGATE MARKET TO COLOURS MAY VARY is 190,080 barley corns or 63,360 inches.
- THE DISTANCE FROM LEEDS ARTS UNIVERSITY TO LEEDS TRAIN STATION is 7040 spans or 28160 nails.
- THE DISTANCE FROM THE ROYAL AMOURIES TO HYDE PARK PICTURE HOUSE is 5914 steps or 2957 paces.
- THE DISTANCE FROM THE CORN EXCHANGE TO THE TETLEY is 880 fathoms or 59 shackles.
- THE DISTANCE FROM THE QUEENS HOTEL TO THE BROADCASTING TOWER is 19312 palms or 76232 digits.
^ Wanting these to be included to a "leeds" edition.
hypothetically there would be different editions for the different cities to make it more relate-able for more people.
Printed out the designs and drawn the lines over top by hand before scanning them in again.
- The printed and scanned process creates a soft tone on the overall images, brings it back to being transitional.
- Makes the grid straighter when it's scanned in.
Need to think about how to translate this to a more modern aesthetic.
